The company that operates the Bucharest Metro, Metrorex, has opted for CAF to enter a framework contract for the supply of Bucharest Metro Line 5 Units with an investment of € 307 million. The contract will be signed in the next few weeks in compliance with the applicable legal timeframe.
This 7 year term framework contract provides for the supply of 51 Metro Units with a minimum of 43 Units. Each Unit has 6 cars made of stainless steel with a capacity of 1,200 passengers in 114 meter long trains. The competitive tender process established the minimum requirements of Line 5 trains as regards minimum consumption, minimum weight, and maximum comfort and safety standards, which have been successfully met by CAF's vehicle. The first units are scheduled for revenue service in 2017.
With a population in excess of 2 million, the Rumanian Capital's first Metro Line was opened in 1979, and currently carries about 650,000 people a day. This new Line 5 will connect the Drumul Taberei area, south-west, with Pantelimon in the east of the City, through a 17.7 km long double tunnel. The first project phase will connect Drumul Taberei to the City Centre via a 9 km long track which is currently under construction, with completion being scheduled for late 2016.
Metrorex already awarded CAF the supply of 16 Units for Metro Line 2 in 2011, and then this project was extended in 2014 with 8 additional Units for an overall investment of circa € 150 million. The first 16 Units are already running on the Bucharest Metro network, while the 8 additional ones will gradually enter revenue service next year.
