Solaris secures orders for over 200 zero-emission buses in Sweden

Through its bus subsidiary Solaris, the CAF Group has secured two new contracts in the Swedish market. These two major contracts, entered into with the operators Nobina and VR Sverige, cover the supply of a total of 204 electric buses. The combined value of the contracts exceeds EUR 125 million.

Swedish operator Nobina to receive 103 Solaris electric buses

Solaris has entered into a new contract with the Swedish operator, Nobina, for the supply of 103 Solaris Urbino 15 LE electric buses. These new zero-emission vehicles are intended to provide services in the Stockholm, Gothenburg and Skåne regions, with deliveries scheduled to begin by mid-2027.

This deal marks further expansion of the Scandinavian public transport operator Nobina’s fleet of Solaris buses in Sweden. Specifically, the operator has ordered 103 of the 15-metre Urbino electric models to be deployed across the country: 50 units will operate in the Stockholm region, 49 in Skåne, and the remaining 4 in the outskirts of Gothenburg.

The Urbino 15 LE electric bus is designed for both urban and suburban transport. Each vehicle will be equipped with state-of-the-art, high-capacity Solaris High Energy batteries, ensuring sufficient range for routes extending beyond urban centres.

The partnership between Solaris and Nobina dates back to 2010. In recent years, the Scandinavian operator has significantly accelerated the expansion of its zero-emission fleet of vehicles. In fact, since 2024, Solaris has supplied 201 electric buses to the operator, and, under current contracts, more than 320 additional electric vehicles are scheduled for delivery between 2026 and 2027. All of this confirms Nobina’s ambitious plans once again to develop more environmentally friendly bus transport, as well as its confidence in Solaris, which will supply versatile vehicles capable of serving both urban and suburban areas across Sweden.

Zero-emission Buses for VR Sverige in Stockholm

Additionally, the Swedish transport company VR Sverige has also opted to purchase Solaris buses; specifically, 101 electric buses. This agreement comes just months after another contract was secured with the same company for the supply of 81 electric buses.

This significant order comprises four models of varying lengths: 5 Urbino 9 LE electric buses, 47 Urbino 12 electric buses with modular traction, 22 Urbino 15 LE electric buses and 27 Urbino 18 electric buses with modular traction. They will all provide passenger services in Stockholm.

Each vehicle will be fitted with an efficient electric drive system and batteries optimised for the specific requirements of each model and route, enabling them to run all day without needing to be recharged. These new buses will greatly enhance mobility and comfort for users in the Swedish capital. They are equipped with a state-of-the-art passenger information system and various driver assistance solutions that will greatly improve safety during operation.

Solaris’s partnership with these operators, Nobina and VR Sverige, represents a significant milestone towards achieving zero-emission transport in the region, and is a testament to the momentum of the electric mobility sector in Sweden - a case in point being that 86% of the buses procured in 2025 were electric. Solaris has played a pivotal role in this transformation for many years, as reflected by the substantial volume of Solaris electric vehicles – surpassing 600 – that will be in operation on Scandinavian roads once these new contracts have been fulfilled.
